I want to start reloading ammo but not sure what reloader I need?
I plan on reloading around 1000 rds total a month of, 9mm, 40mm, 38, 357 mag, .223, .243, 308, and 8mm and was wondering what reloader will suit me. All ammo I will reload is going to be for target, and plicking. Nothing for hunting. I know I will have to buy dies for each caliber. Thanks in advance, and best answer will get my vote.
If you're new to reloading, and you're going to do so many different calibers, I would suggest you get a turret press, not a progressive press. Personally, I'd recommend a LEE Classic Turret Press.
Progressive presses are great, but they are more expensive and they take more work to set up. If you're going to be changing calibers frequently, this creates additional work. If you really want to spend the coin, get a different progressive press for each caliber you want to reload, then leave them alone once they're set up.
A turret press can load pistol rounds fairly quickly. I can load 300-400 rounds of pistol ammo per hour on my LEE Classic Turret Press. This does not include the time I spent in case preparation (tumbling, sorting calibers and damaged cases out, checking in a case gauge, etc...) which is time you'll spend regardless of what kind of press you get.
I wouldn't recommend the LEE Deluxe Turret Press. It is a perfectly good Reloading Press, don't get me wrong, but the decapped primers can be a pain to clean up with this press. Otherwise, this is a fine press.
You can load rifle rounds on the Lee Deluxe Turret Press as well - although I'd suggest using a single stage press, or setting up the turret press as a single stage (very easy, takes 5 seconds). Like other posters have said, rifle rounds require more attention and care, and I would discourage you from reloading rifle rounds on a progressive press.
All that being said, make sure you get at least 2 good reloading manuals, wear safety glasses when reloading, and avoid any device that uses a tube to store primers for loading. Primer tubes are an accident waiting to happen.
I load 9mm, .40 S&W, .38 special, .357 mag, and .223. .40 S&W can be a feisty round because of the possible case pressures. You have to be especially careful not to seat your bullets too far into the case. Do you know where all of your .40 S&W brass came from? Was any of it fired from a Glock with a factory barrel? If so, you have to look out for cases with a bulge on the bottom, which is caused by the loose chamber Glocks have. That bulge can easily become a weak spot, and if your bullet is seated too deap, or the crimp is too tight (or both) the case can blow out, causing a Ka-Boom! Something to avoid, just FYI.
Have fun, practice safe reloading, and get a turret press. You won't be disappointed.
