Sizing .30-06 Cal. Brass Casings?
I am reloading my first .30-06 cal. Springfield brass casings. I am using a Lee press and Lee dies, satisfactory for my loading of other ammunition. I note that the die sizes the casing to a point about 1/4" to 3/8" above the extraction groove on the casing. Adjustment of the die doesn't affect this. For these casings, how far down should the casings be sized? I expected that the die would size the casing all the way down to the groove.
It is normal not to size that section just above the groove. It is difficult to make a press and dies that will do it, and it is usually not necessary anyway. The brass case is solid at most of this section and doesn't really expand so doesn't need to be resized that far anyway.
There are "small base" dies which will get a little further down the case, supposedly for more reliability with semiautomatics and lever-actions, but even their usefulness is debatable.
In fact, if you are reloading cases that came out of YOUR bolt-action rifle, and will be used only back in that same rifle, you can sometimes just use a neck-sizing die and not worry about resizing the case body at all. Your brass will last longer, too, but if there are more than one rifle that the ammo might be for, you should do the standard full-length resizing that you are doing now.
By the way, Lee dies are outstanding. I have a Dillon press for most of my loading, but I have just as many Lee dies as I do Dillon dies. And I always keep a Lee single-stage press around for little jobs.
